We all carry information. Ordering and translating such into my world of pictures is the subject of my work. I often start with photo sketches which I transfer using different methods. This not only strengthens reality, it also puts it into perspective, expressing my current state of understanding. It invites the viewer to search for the core of the matter.
Acrylic on canvas,
approx 70 x 100 cm... A study that I did last evening at school. Basis was the painting I did yesterday, with the idea to find out the level of abstraction that keeps a bus as bus...
Charcoal on paper, 135 x 150 cm... Did this charcoal drawing this Saturday. It documents my impressions of watching the water of the Limmat in Zurich...
After a wonderful
long weekend in Milan back to the drawing board… Another gouache on paper, 50 x
70 cm… I was experimenting with the background and trying to make a quite detailed
surface more atmospheric. Quite challenging with dense gouache and layers that
are not treated with fixative… still a long route to go what makes such experiments
so exciting…J
Is my working with charcoal and ink influencing the one I do with colors? The first 4 above are done in charcoal, while for the other 2 I did in ink (with a brush)... the smaller in 50 x 70cm, the larger in 70 x 100 cm
Followed the route I started earlier this week, by combining my most recent painting (in gouache, approx 100 x 120cm) with a photo I once did, to "test" the level of abstractions necessary to express the view having in mind...
Did today my first paintings after months of working in black & white... the first using a smaller format to become used again, and the above in 50 x 70 cm
Then digitally combined it with one of my photos, as I love it to do experiments... more will follow :)
Spent again wonderful days in Leipzig where my gravures are currently printed in the underground of the Spinnerei... You can find the whole serie on my homepage under http://www.thomaswidmer.com/gravures.html
